What is a sinkhole? |
| Sinkholes are naturally occurring geological cavities underneath the land. They are very common and one of the predominant landforms in Florida, where they are hazardous to property and the environment. |
| Sinkholes develop naturally, but are accelerated due to the development of ground-water and land resources changing the levels of the water tables. Sink holes can sometimes cause substantial property damage and structural problems for roads and buildings. |

Florida is prone to sinkhole formation because the carbonate deposits that underlain are dissolved by circulating ground water through the aquifers. As ground water development is progressed the water tables in the aquifers drop, causing a cavity also known as a "sinkhole". The larger the cavity the more susceptible the property is to settlement and structural damage. |
